How to Prepare Your Walls for Painting

1. Clean the Walls
Start by washing your walls to remove dust, dirt, and grease. A simple solution of water and mild dish soap usually does the trick. For tougher stains, you might need a stronger cleaner.
2. Repair Any Damage
Inspect the walls for holes, cracks, or dents. Fill these imperfections with spackling compound or wall putty. Once dry, sand the patched areas smooth.
3. Sand the Surface
Lightly sand the entire wall to create a slightly rough surface. This helps the new paint adhere better. Be sure to wipe away any dust after sanding.
4. Tape Off the Edges
Use painter's tape to protect trim, baseboards, windows, and doors. Take your time with this step to ensure clean, straight lines.
5. Apply Primer
Priming is crucial, especially if you're painting over a dark color or repairing extensive damage. It provides a uniform surface for the topcoat and improves color accuracy.
